Despite the fact golf is largely considered an individualistic pursuit, successful partnerships are venerated within golf’s competitive bubble.
At GolfBox Custom, there’s an equally effective partnership at play. And it’s one that underlines the benefit of being fitted at a GolfBoxCustom Studio. What is it?
It’s the partnership between True Spec Golf and Club Conex.
GolfBox Custom is powered by the True Spec fitting matrix, but the Club Conex universal adapter system is undoubtedly its secret sauce. It allows our team of Master Fitters to match any shaft to any clubhead (within the category) with incredible efficiency during a custom fitting session.
No other fitting enterprise can match the consistency, accuracy and personalisation of a True Spec Golf fitting. And that is largely because of how Club Conex universal adapters are integrated within the fitting process.
Let us explain…
THE TRUE SPEC FITTING MATRIX
At GolfBox Custom our fitting matrix is essentially a manifest of all the shaft and club head combinations we offer.
Our True Spec Golf fitting matrix currently clocks in at over 50,000 permutations, which is by far the most comprehensive in the game. But that incredible variety is only possible because of the unique way we apply and install several different Club Conex adapters to driver, fairway wood, hybrid, iron and wedge fitting heads when customers come in to see us.
WEIGHT, LENGTH AND CONSISTENCY
The True Spec Golf fitting process at GolfBox Custom is powered by three different Club Conex adapters: the UNI-FIT for driver fittings, the FAZ-FIT for fairway and hybrid fittings, and the FUSE-FIT for irons and wedges.
What’s the reason for the three different adapters?
It exponentially expands the possible combinations in the TrueSpec Golf fitting matrix.
But it also ensures rigorous consistency in both shaft length and head weight throughout the testing phase. And we believe that is one of the most critical aspects of the fitting process.
It guarantees that when our customers send their club spec sheets to be built at the GolfBox Custom Build Shop, the finished product will feel and perform like the shaft and head combination that clicked with their swing during testing.
DRIVER FITTINGS
The Club Conex UNI-FIT adapter is True Spec-endorsed for driver fittings.
Driver heads vary from brand to brand with regards to the shaft length that terminates inside the club head.
Hence, using the same shaft in different driver heads can result in a significant variation in total shaft length — an inconvenience that makes an objective performance comparison impossible between different driver heads.
The UNI-FIT adapter used at GolfBox Custom solves this issue by creating a universal shaft length for all drivers. And it’s this consistency that enables our fitters to analyse accurate data and then compare the performance of one driver to another.
The UNI-FIT adapter also offers 12 loft and lie angle positions that help a fitter fine tune specs during testing, with the adapter settings able to be transferred between different models during testing.
FAIRWAY AND HYBRID FITTINGS
True Spec specify the Club Conex FAZ-FIT adapter for fairway and hybrid fittings, and for very good reason.
Most manufacturers now offer fairway woods and hybrids that are fitted with both adjustable and bonded hosels.
However, these varying hosel styles impact the fitting matrix of many fitters, who need to divide up their shaft offerings into those for bonded hosels, and those for adjustable hosels. And even manufacturers don’t offer full shaft interchangeability across their bonded and adjustable fairway and hybrid offerings.
However, True Spec Golf’s unique application of the FAZ-FIT adapter solves the issue and opens up a huge array of shaft and head combinations.
How does it work?
For bonded fairway and hybrid fitting heads, the FAZ-FIT adapter is affixed directly on the head. For an adjustable hosel, the FAZ-FIT adapter is installed to the manufacturer’s original loft sleeve.
These contrasting techniques enable a customer to test an identical shaft (and identical shaft lengths) in both bonded or adjustable fairway and hybrid fitting heads.
And it also offers our GolfBox Custom team greater flexibility, with our Master Fitters able to use the original loft sleeve to personalise loft and lie angle in fairway and hybrids featuring an adjustable hosel.
True Spec’s workaround using the FAZ-FIT adapter is unique in the industry. It’s the only way to achieve a side-by-side comparison between bonded or adjustable hosels and offers the largest range of head and shaft combinations for fairway woods and hybrids.
IRON FITTINGS
With over 150 iron heads in the True Spec Golf fitting matrix, there’s a truly remarkable level of detail involved in deploying the Club Conex FUSE-FIT adapter.
It’s probably no surprise to discover that every iron head is unique. While hosel diameters are mostly uniform, hosel lengths and depths tend to differ depending on the manufacturer and the model of iron (hosel length is the bit you can see on the outside; hosel depth is the interior, where the shaft is inserted into the hosel).
To achieve a level playing field in the fitting process, True Spec install the FUSE-FIT adapter uniquely in every test iron head. Each hosel is drilled out to a precise depth to achieve a uniform shaft length across the 150-plus irons in the True Spec Golf fitting matrix.
But even more remarkable is the way the True Spec Golf fitting system accounts for the inclusion of the FUSE-FIT unit. Compensations are made to ensure the weight of the fitting head is identical to the club head that will eventually be unwrapped and constructed to a client’s custom specifications in the Build Shop.
Other brand agnostic club fitters simply drill out the fitting head to install their adapter inside the hosel, leading to in consistent shaft lengths and lighter head weights.
And having a manufacturer-direct iron fitting can be even more problematic: most drill straight through their fitting irons then bolt the shaft to the head through the sole.
Neither of those scenarios compensate for the altered head weight, leading to fitting heads that are much lighter and performance that is noticeably different to the finished product.
THE GRIP
Another detail worth mentioning in the True Spec Golf fitting process is the standard round grip that is used, rather than one with ribs or fluting.
There’s an excellent reason for this: it gives fitters the freedom to rotate the hosel adapter through every loft and lie angle setting during testing while maintaining a consistent weight at the other end of the club.
