Our team of Master Fitters trawl through an avalanche of information during every Custom Fitting to identify an equipment combination best suited to a player’s swing.
While customers don’t need to be cognisant of every measurement, understanding a few of the most critical ones should make time spent in the Fitting Studio much more productive and enjoyable.
With that in mind, the parameter called Angle of Attack is worth understanding.
Our Custom Fitting staff analyse it closely because it has a significant influence on shot outcomes.
ANGLE OF ATTACK EXPLAINED
Angle of Attack is an indication of the clubhead’s vertical direction at the moment of impact.
It has a major bearing on spin and launch and is determined by a player’s delivery and release pattern, as well as the type of club being swung. It is measured in degrees relative to the horizontal plane.
If the clubhead is travelling downward, it will create a negative AoA. If the clubhead is ascending into the ball at impact, a positive AoA will be generated.
Angle of Attack can also be neutral or zero, which would see the clubhead completely level at impact.
WHY ANGLE OF ATTACK IS IMPORTANT
It’s important to understand that, in order to hit quality golf shots, different clubs require a different angle of attack.
To maximise distance with a driver off the tee, a positive AoA (clubhead travelling upward as it is coming into contact with the golf ball) is needed.
The opposite is true for a short iron, which requires a player to hit down on the ball. Thus, a negative AoA (clubhead is travelling downwards) is required.
MEASURING ANGLE OF ATTACK AT GOLFBOX CUSTOM
Angle of Attack is impossible to determine with the naked eye. The only way to precisely measure it is through a launch monitor, such as the Foresight GC Quad we use at GolfBox Custom.
An Angle of Attack that is too steep or shallow will result in inconsistent strikes and poor shot outcomes.
However, the Master Fitters at GolfBox Custom can optimise a player’s Angle of Attack by finetuning the clubhead/shaft combination, for every club in the bag.
With an ideal AoA, trajectory, spin and control will all be enhanced to maximise shot quality.
