WELCOME TO THE MATRIX: AUGUST — TITLEIST GT
Posted On
September 3, 2024

Titleist’s new GT metalwood franchise has just touched down at GolfBox Custom and our Master Fitters have been keen to discover how its “Generational Technology” stacks up in the fitting bay.

The GT range has been two years in the making and our initial testing indicates it’s a significant step for Titleist, and a compelling addition to the True Spec fitting matrix.

The release includes three new drivers (GT2, GT3 and GT4) and two fairway woods (GT2 and GT3) and improves on the previous Titleist TSR range by pushing the limits in three key areas: aero, CG and face tech.

THERMOFORM CROWN

Titleist had, until now, clung doggedly to all-titanium driver heads. But the GT range represents a seismic shift in design philosophy as Titleist venture into carbon fibre construction for the very first time.

Predictably, Titleist focused on a carbon fibre crown to kick things off. The result is a “Thermoform Crown” and in simple mass terms, it saves some serious change to be spent elsewhere in the head (more on that later).

But that’s only half of it. Titleist invested a significant amount of research to make the Thermoform crown sound just like a regular titanium crown. They got it right, too, because the entire GT range resonates with a deep, solid impact note that is spookily comparable to an all-titanium driver.

The signature Titleist sound endures but unlike other manufacturers, Titleist have concealed any trace of the new carbon fibre crown. It’s hidden by the flawless piano black finish that Titleist are known for and delivers a premium aesthetic.

SPLIT MASS CONSTRUCTION

Titleist’s carbon fibre crown unlocked the ability to shift weight around the head in the GT range, enabling Titleist to finetune the CG for each model.

Overall, the CG has been shifted closer to the face throughout the GT range, which creates a little lower spin. It also allowed Titleist to position the CG weight track in the GT3 driver nearer to the front of the face, rather than on the rear perimeter — as was the case in the TSR3 driver.

However, there’s more to the story. Titleist have managed to load the remaining discretionary mass in the very back of the club head to improve stability significantly.

The split between mass in the front and back of the head is tuned according to the model but produces net gains in speed and stability in every GT driver and fairway.

AERO PACKAGE AND SPEED RING FACE

Generational Technology extends to the aerodynamic performance of the GT range.

Changes to the shape of the GT driver and fairways, particularly where the crown and sole converge at the rear of the club head, has resulted in speed gains through the air.

While aero gains aren’t linear — they’ll offer greater benefit to players with faster swing speeds — Titleist estimate players will pick up around 1mph of club head speed via the slipperier GT head design.

Meanwhile, the face of the GT driver has been upgraded, with the Speed Ring that previously featured only on the TSR3 driver now standard across all three GT drivers.

In conjunction with a variable thickness face, the Speed Ring boosts ball velocity marginally out of the centre of the face. But consistency is where the Speed Ring delivers: spin rates don’t really fluctuate as strikes stray from the centre, providing a consistency of launch that is highly sought after for both tour pros and amateurs.

FITTING THE TITLEIST GT RANGE AT GOLFBOX CUSTOM

Titleist have put a lot of work into getting their Generational Technology right for the GT range and it’s better in almost every aspect: sound, feel, appearance and performance.

But to get the most out of the GT range you must be fit correctly.

Working with your swing data, a GolfBox Custom Master Fitter will recommend the perfect combination of GT head, shaft, loft and grip to extract optimal performance out of your swing.

TITLEIST GT MODELS

Generational Technology has delivered a healthy level of separation between models in the Titleist GT line-up.

GT2 DRIVER

With a longer front-to-back profile and interchangeable weight on the rear, the GT2 is considered the highest-launching driver in the GT range.

GT3 DRIVER

Offering a more compact, pear-shaped profile and lower spin than the GT2, the GT3 driver features an adjustable weight track near the front of the sole to fine tune the CG for ball-flight bias.

GT4 DRIVER

A smaller 430cc head and a front-and-rear sole weight combo cuts spin and lowers launch. The GT4 is the lowest spinning driver in the GT range but also offers the greatest workability.

GT2 FAIRWAY WOOD

Featuring a similar performance profile to its driver counterpart, the GT2 fairway wood is designed to launch higher than the GT3 fairway and provide more forgiveness.

GT3 FAIRWAY WOOD

Like the GT3 driver, the GT3 fairway wood offers lower spin and a five-position adjustable weight track on the front of the sole to finetune CG for customised ball flights.
