Bettinardi’s debut irons have been turning heads at GolfBox Custom Fitting Studios since they arrived last month, and our Master Fitters were interested to see how the performance stacked up against the stellar aesthetics.
So, the team ran the numbers on the Bettinardi CB24 and MB24 irons and were intrigued with the results.
Both irons are forged from carbon steel and feature a progressive centre of gravity through the set, achieved via a tungsten weight positioned in the toe and a ceramic composite pad set behind the strike zone.
Ceramic is expensive and difficult to implement in an iron. But Bettinardi were convinced the low-density material would deliver significant benefits by creating a sort of hollowed out zone in the centre of the head.
That was the theory. But did the clean looking clubs scrub up OK in the data?
Armed with a pair of CB24 and MB24 six irons, both featuring 29° of loft, our Master Fitters gleaned some valuable information in the head-to-head test.
The cavity-back CB player’s iron was adept at keeping spin rates down. Despite being focused on forgiveness, it is one of the lower-spinning heads in the True Spec Golf fitting matrix.
The muscleback MB24 blade offered even less spin than the CB24 but, interestingly, it carried a little further.
A slightly lower launch angle was the explanation, the result of the MB24’s higher centre of gravity in comparison to the CB24 — which has a cavity cut out the back.
If you’re a player with high speed but struggle to control spin rates with your irons, the MB24 and CB24 irons should knock down rpms through the clubhead design. Both irons could also be an ideal option for players with a steep angle of attack.
However, a GolfBox Custom Master Fitter will always assess the performance of head and shaft in tandem to unlock the optimum performance combination for a customer.
While both irons might appear intended for better players who can generate some speed, they performed amazingly well in heel strikes, particularly for a blade/player’s iron profile.
If you hit it low, Masters Fitters will possibly gravitate towards the CB24 to achieve a little more height and spin. But both irons have identical lofts to blend seamlessly into a combo set, along with similar toplines and offsets that match up well.
Bettinardi CB24 and MB24 irons are now available for fitting at GolfBox Custom.
